Below are the books I find essential and the web sites that inspire or instruct me about the web and making better web sites.
Being a photographer, I specialize in reworking "found art". Consequently, design on a blank screen stretches me. Fortunately I have great teachers.

Most of the books you can get by supporting your public library and saving a tree.
Each of the links opens in a new blank screen. I do this so you can follow the links and threads on these pages and then still return to where you started. I use this technique regularly myself.

Books
Cascading Style Sheets
Håkon Wuim Lie & Bert Bos
These men wrote the recommendation for CSS. No wonder it is so good. This book is a treasure of information and clarity. And they even have a sense of humor.
Designing Web Usability
Jakob Nielsen
Long awaited, I am glad to see this in print, but what an akward, ugly volume. Well supported conclusions. I wish everyone who designs for the web would at least skim this book.
Web Style Guide
Patrick Lynch
A short and inexpensive book packed with solid information about how to make a better web site. I highly recommend this book. If you have been doing web development for a while, it's still worth reading. Jakob Nielsen may have good words on site usability, but if you need help on the mechanism of building a site or how it might look, this man knows what he is talking about.

Web Sites
patricklynch.net Was my top bookmark, but has not been updated in well over a year. He must be busy—you know, "the cobblers children have no shoes..." His bibliography is well annotated and his design sense is clean. Check out "Recent Work" at the bottom of his page.
WebWord.com Good place to stay up on other web designers opinions. Good links, right at the top of the page.
Robin Williams Another designer I like a lot. Spare. Different. Nice hats. People should wear more hats.
